Volunteer Spotlight: Gail Watkins

Since 2008, Gail Watkins has demonstrated her committed service to CPC’s ministry and the Suffolk community through her involvement in the Great Expectations (GE) parenting class program. Gail often goes above and beyond the call of duty, filling a void in our ministry when no one else was able. “Grandma Gail,” as clients affectionately call her, builds strong rapport with those who attend GE classes, which builds faithful attendance.

In her own words, “Most of the girls have a hard time believing you would be willing to do something for them just because you care about them. It’s a novel experience for them and an opportunity for us to lead right into a conversation about how salvation is a no-strings-attached gift from God, through Jesus Christ!”

Thank you, Gail, for nurturing those around you with Christ’s love!

Sanctity of Human Life Week 2012

Every day over 3,000 hearts stop beating in America because of abortion.

In South Hampton Roads 7,785 abortions were performed in 2010.* For every two babies born, one will lose its life to an abortion. There are more lives lost to abortion than any other cause of death.

“Hasten, O God, to save me; come quickly, LORD, to help me.”
Psalm 70:1 NIV

Sanctity of Human Life Week will be observed nationally January 15-22, 2012. This is a special time when thousands of churches across the nation recognize the anniversary of Roe v. Wade and focus on the value and sanctity of human life.

Abortion ends when love wins ... and love always wins!

“There is a love revolution happening in South Hampton Roads. Like never before, God is impressing the hearts of people to help preborn children and their moms facing crisis pregnancies. As this happens, the number of abortions is going down in our community.”
–Toby DeBause, President of CPC

Cymone's Story

When Cymone first visited The Keim Centers, her client advocate asked if she would like to get to know God. During the next six months, Cymone attended a weekly Bible study, excited to learn more about Jesus Christ and the forgiveness only He is able to provide.

Before delivering a healthy baby girl last January, Cymone made the decision to follow Christ. Cymone was one of 82 clients who made first-time commitments to Christ in 2010.

Cymone and her daughter, Kanaurie, are actual clients of The Keim Centers. Their names and likenesses have not been changed.

Abortion Providers Charged With Murder

Last week, Steven Brigham, the owner of American Women’s Services clinics, and his employee, Nicola Riley, were arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder after a 16-month criminal investigation by Maryland authorities.  Brigham’s first-degree murder charges stem from abortions provided to five patients ranging from 18 to 33 weeks pregnant.  The initial investigation that began in August 2010 revealed Brigham illegally initiated abortions at a clinic in New Jersey and then completed the procedures at a clinic in Maryland, where he was not licensed.  During the investigation, officers found 35 fetuses in a freezer in Brigham’s clinic in Maryland.
Brigham is being held on $3 million bail in New Jersey and an arraignment hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

Brigham’s American Women’s Services are headquartered in New Jersey, but also operate in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia, including Virginia Women’s Wellness in Virginia Beach.  Brigham's medical license has been suspended and revoked in multiple states, and he does not have a license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Another abortion provider we reported on last year (http://www.cpcfriendsblog.com/2011/01/todays-news-philadelphia-abortion.html and http://www.cpcfriendsblog.com/2011/01/update-philadelphia-abortion-doctor-has.html) is again in the news.  Dr. Kermit Gosnell, a late term abortion provider in Philadelphia, was arrested last January and charged with third degree murder for the death of a client as well as seven babies born during the sixth, seventh and eighth month of pregnancy.  His client was from Virginia.  Gosnell has since pleaded not guilty to murder but is scheduled for a capital jury trial in March 2013.

January Prayer Focus

PLEASE PRAY   CPC humbly requests your intentional prayer for:

SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE   January is a special time to join together as the body of Christ to recognize the value and sanctity of human life. Pray for our community to respond to the call to defend life by providing a voice for the voiceless.

COMMUNITY AWARENESS   CPC is hosting a forum of community leaders on January 17th at Regent University to discuss the disproportionate impact of abortion in the black community. Please pray for the promotion, participation and organization of this new event. We pray God will use this event to awaken our community to this great injustice and to begin the process of change.

CLINIC NURSES   Each day in our medical clinics, our nurses unveil life to new clients. Pray for God to daily grant our nurses the strength and compassion to serve women who are grappling with the life-changing decision regarding the child in their womb. We ask God to move through our nurses and protect each innocent pre-born life shown on the ultrasound.

Special Gifts Help Virginia Beach Clinic Open in 2011

“As church support for CPC goes up, the number of local abortions goes down.”
– Toby DeBause, President of Crisis Pregnancy Center of Tidewater

CPC has not been exempt from the effects of this tumultuous economy. So much so that it appeared the new Virginia Beach clinic was not going to be a reality this year. However, God used many individuals and churches who gave unexpected donations that put the clinic back on track for a June 2011 opening.

In January, Atlantic Shores Baptist Church started a new campaign to raise funds for several of their own ministry projects. However, they decided to give away the first 10 percent collected to other ministries. They included CPC in their “Thank You Jesus” offering with a donation of $10,000!

The following weekend, Liberty Christian Fellowship (LCF) presented a check to CPC in the amount of $40,000! This is the second gift of $40,000 in ten years that LCF has given to CPC. They wanted to give a large gift as they considered investing in a new location for their own church home. LCF is a congregation with approximately 70 people in attendance every Sunday. Toby DeBause says LCF “is the biggest small church in Hampton Roads.”

Also, as CPC was making final preparations to move into the new clinic location, Church of the Messiah gave a gift of $5,000! God had made provision over and above their need for one month and they wanted to give a portion to another ministry.

Praise God for His on-time and much needed provision through His Body!

If you would like to give a special gift of love, please feel free to donate online at http://www.cpcfriends.org/. Gifts received or postmarked by December 31 are tax deductible for 2011. Thank you!

Good news!

Dear Friends,

Great news! According to a recent report from the Virginia Department of Health...

the number of abortions performed in South Hampton Roads decreased again in 2010!

This continues a six year trend in the right direction. Since 2004, more and more women are choosing LIFE for their children!

This encouraging trend began soon after CPC opened its first medical clinic in Norfolk offering life-revealing ultrasound, and we look forward to even more lives saved now that CPC's second clinic has opened in Virginia Beach. Since its opening in June, the number of women helped by this ministry has increased by 17% compared to the same period last year.

I hope you are encouraged by this news. It is exciting to be part of a ministry where God is rescuing the most defenseless and vulnerable in our community. This gives us even more reason to rejoice as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, who took on human form and made himself vulnerable and defenseless for us.

May God bless you and your family this Christmas,

Toby DeBause
President

In this season of giving, please remember CPC. Gifts postmarked by December 31 are tax deductible for 2011. Give online at cpcfriends.org or call our main office at 757.410.9703 for more options. Thank you!

Our Medical Director

Dr. Diana Fedei has more than 15 years of experience as a board certified medical doctor specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. Not only does she have a passion for serving women in her own practice, Genis Women’s Care, she also volunteers her time to help women and families as the medical director for CPC’s Keim Centers.

When asked about her dedication to CPC, Dr. Fedei said, “I support the work of CPC because I believe CPC’s work is the kind with which our Lord is pleased – protecting children, the fatherless and orphans, evangelizing, teaching, disciplining and edifying.” She continues, “The Lord had me at the right place at the right time to meet the needs of CPC. It’s not a work I would have sought for myself, but there is something fortifying when I know it was my Lord and God who put me there for His purposes.”

We are grateful Dr. Fedei accepted the call to serve as our medical director. She is critical to the ongoing work of sharing Christ’s love and compassion with thousands of women and their children here in our community.

Thank you, Dr. Fedei!

Pour Les Enfants: A Silent Art Auction "For The Children"

On December 3, 2011, local artists will gather both individually and through participating churches in order to benefit the Crisis Pregnancy Center of Tidewater with their art.  Sovereign Grace Church’s Access group will host a silent auction for various pieces of art as well as provide live entertainment for a great evening out.

Why get involved?  Nate Bauers, a member of Sovereign Grace Church’s administrative team, explains the motivation behind the special evening.

“We decided to host an art auction because this is a great chance to tap into the artistic talents of folks in our churches and in the community.  It's a chance for them to use their artistic talents for the Lord and His purposes in our area.  Our goals for this event are to raise as much for CPC as possible, and to draw others into the mission of CPC and into a relationship with the Savior.  We chose to support CPC because they are a ministry that we, as a church, support and stand with, and we see how they truly are on the front lines of doing gospel work, justice work, and bringing about the reconciliation that Jesus accomplished and purchased for us.  We see how CPC impacts the community by their simple love for the hurting, the broken, and the helpless.  They are a light in a dark world, and bring much glory to God.”

“Our prayer is that attendees of this event would leave encouraged by what the CPC is doing, and would see the true work of Jesus and His Church through what we are doing...as well as leave with a great piece of art in their hands!”

This is an adult-only event held at Sovereign Grace Church with 100 percent of the auction proceeds going towards CPC.  For more information and to register online, visit www.sgconline.org/access.

The Keim Center of Virginia Beach

TRENDING TOWARDS LIFE

In 2004, the number of abortions in South Hampton Roads climbed to an all-time high – 9,269 precious preborn lives were lost in that year alone.

The following year, CPC opened a medical clinic, The Keim Center of Norfolk, offering life-revealing ultrasound services. Since the clinic opened, the number of women The Keim Centers serve annually has increased by 165 percent and abortions in South Hampton Roads have decreased by more than 16 percent.

Wanting this trend towards LIFE to continue, CPC began work on opening a new medical clinic in Virginia Beach soon after opening the Norfolk clinic. After many years of prayer and preparation, The Keim Center of Virginia Beach opened on June 6, 2011!

IDEAL LOCATION

Town Center is located within a Strategic Growth Area – areas carefully defined by the city that are planned to accommodate and absorb urban growth.

We recognized early in our search that Town Center is the most convenient location for women considering abortion in Virginia Beach, and will continue to be an ideal location as the area experiences additional growth. Town Center is centrally positioned, easily accessible, and minutes away from anywhere in Virginia Beach.

SUSTAINING THE CLINIC

Prior to opening the Virginia Beach clinic, CPC had reached its monthly funding goal to sustain this new clinic. However, with a challenge grant set to expire and the loss of support in recent months from the tumultuous economy, CPC now needs $7,500 of committed monthly support.

One hour of ministry costs approximately $50. Therefore, this need equates to 150 hours of life-saving, heart-sparing ministry each month. If you would like to financially partner with CPC's ministry, please donate online or connect with us today.

Real Life: Carolina's Story

Carolina and her husband were both serving in the Navy when they first came to The Keim Center, pregnant with their second child and considering abortion. Even though Carolina and her husband had discussed having another baby, they planned to focus on her career instead. After learning Carolina was pregnant, the couple was scared.

Carolina said, “[One of the supervisors] said it really clear – that women in the Navy are not useful when they are pregnant. And we do that on purpose not to go to sea duty. I thought they were going to think that [of me], but I really wanted to go to sea duty.”

As Carolina and her husband focused on the career plan they had created, they made an appointment at an abortion clinic to terminate her pregnancy. Once at the clinic – physically prepared to complete the procedure – the couple realized this was not what they wanted and they left. Carolina came to The Keim Center looking for help.

“During the first session, I was relieved because I was able to say all of the things I was feeling. There was no judgment – not even in [my advocate’s] facial expressions. She was very supportive. She knew the words to tell me to guide me – she never pushed me into anything. She had the words to comfort me and she made me look for my own answer.”

Carolina and her husband knew the best option for them was to choose life for their preborn daughter. She shared the news with her family and employer, all of whom were happy and very supportive of their decision.

After a difficult pregnancy, Carolina delivered her daughter and received ongoing support from her advocate to work through the feelings of guilt about her initial decision to abort. Carolina’s husband continues to serve in the Navy, but she is now pursuing a degree in the medical field. God has become an integral part of the family’s life.

“I believe He is the one that made me find The Keim Center. [My advocate] was the perfect connector between Him and I.”

Volunteer Spotlight: Leigh Gorski

We are so honored the Lord has allowed us the privilege to have Leigh Gorski as part of our volunteer family. For the past 11 years, Leigh has faithfully and generously given her time and talents to invest in CPC’s ministry. Among her many gifts and skills, contributing to the success of our special events is an area where she brings commitment and excellence. Leigh is a natural problem solver, and her eye for solutions has helped us see and implement many creative improvements to longstanding challenges. Her organized and calm demeanor ensures whatever area she is leading is done with great ability and passion. It is evident she genuinely loves people, is resolute in the cause for life and has a heart to serve. Thank you, Leigh, for honoring LIFE and our Lord!

November Prayer Focus

PLEASE PRAY   CPC humbly requests your prayers for:
NEW NURSE MANAGER   We are seeking to hire a Registered Nurse to serve in the role of nurse manager. Please pray for this nurse, as she will oversee daily operations of a medical clinic, including medical services, counseling clients and volunteer management. Pray for God to lead the right woman into our ministry – a woman who possesses a strong conviction to affirm life, a passion for working with women facing unplanned pregnancies, and evidence of a growing relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

SALVATION FOR OUR CLIENTS   Please continue to pray for the salvation of our clients. Several clients have been attending our Bridging the Gap Bible studies on a regular basis – they are asking questions and seeking hope. Pray God works in their hearts and opens them to receiving Jesus Christ as their Savior.

HEART TO SERVE   CPC’s ministry has a consistent and very real need for committed volunteers. Please pray for God to open the hearts, minds and schedules of His people to the opportunity to use the good gifts He has provided to serve and help others through CPC’s ministry.
