It isn't pretense - It's the natural course of events when God is no longer worshipped or even acknowledged. It's the 3rd chapter of Genesis all over again - we can become "as God" - with consequences only sinners could breed.
This is sad to see people hopeless and deceived. We (as the Body) need to step up and shine our light in dark places.
